The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) wrapped up its three-day consultation on the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal in Lucknow. During the final day, the committee engaged with vice-chancellors, directors of universities, legal experts, and political scientists from Uttar Pradesh. The consultations aimed to gather diverse perspectives on the feasibility and implications of simultaneous elections for various levels of government.
Participants discussed logistical requirements, necessary constitutional amendments, and the potential impact on India’s federal structure and democratic process. JPC Chairman P.P. Chaudhary expressed satisfaction with the quality of inputs received during the meeting. He highlighted the objective approach of the committee and emphasized that all suggestions would be carefully considered before finalizing recommendations.
Chaudhary assured that only recommendations serving the national interest and democratic framework would be presented to Parliament. The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, a key agenda of the NDA government, aims to streamline elections and reduce costs. Critics have raised concerns about its impact on federalism and regional issues. The nationwide consultations by the JPC demonstrate the government’s efforts to seek consensus before proposing constitutional amendments.
