JSW Steel and POSCO have revealed plans to create a 50-50 joint venture to build a 6 million tonnes per annum integrated steel plant in Odisha by the end of 2026. This announcement, shared by Kyunghoon Kim on the social media platform X, precedes the upcoming high-level summit between India and South Korea. The joint project is viewed as a significant move by a Korean company to support India’s manufacturing goals under the Make in India initiative.

The proposed steel plant in Odisha is anticipated to bolster domestic production capacity and foster technology collaboration between Indian and Korean enterprises. This initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of establishing itself as a global manufacturing center and reducing reliance on imports, particularly in critical sectors like steel. The timing of this development is noteworthy as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to visit New Delhi today as part of a two-nation tour, which also includes Vietnam.

Lee’s visit is expected to concentrate on expanding cooperation in various sectors such as shipbuilding, maritime industries, artificial intelligence, and defense. Additionally, the discussions are likely to address uncertainties in the global energy supply chain due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. Officials have highlighted that enhancing economic ties and supporting Korean businesses in India will be key focal points during the visit. India has emerged as a vital production hub and a rapidly growing consumer market for South Korean firms, particularly in segments like electronics, automobiles, and heavy industries.
