Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo took the oath as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court on Wednesday. The oath was administered by Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan at Lok Bhavan in Patna. He becomes the 47th person to hold this position.
The swearing-in ceremony was graced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, members of the state cabinet, judges of the Patna High Court, and other dignitaries. Justice Sahoo’s appointment was formally notified by the Union Law Ministry on January 1 after receiving approval from the President.
Previously serving as a judge in the Odisha High Court, Justice Sahoo was recommended for the role of Chief Justice of the Patna High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium in a meeting held on December 18, 2025. Currently, Justice Sudhir Singh is the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court following the retirement of Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa Bajanthri in October.
Born in 1964, Justice Sahoo has a strong legal background. He completed his education from Nayabazar High School, Cuttack, and Stewart Science College. With a Master’s degree in English and Odia from Utkal University, he comes from a family deeply rooted in law and justice.
