Kalaburagi’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister, Priyank Kharge, expressed pride as the local delicacy, “Kalaburagi rotti,” made by women from self-help groups, is now being exported abroad. Recently, consignments of these rotis were sent to Australia, the United States, and Canada through India Post, marking a significant milestone. The “Kalaburagi Rotti” brand, launched a year and a half ago, involves around 1,000 women from 100 self-help groups in making traditional jowar rotis.
Kharge highlighted that a Pune-based export company is facilitating the export of these rotis to the United States, Canada, and Australia, representing a remarkable achievement for Kalaburagi. The initiative aims to export 10,000 Kalaburagi jowar rotis monthly to the US and Australia, with an additional 5,000 rotis destined for Canada. The numbers are expected to rise in the future, enhancing the economic prospects for the women involved.
Specially prepared export packs have been flagged off for shipment abroad through India Post, with plans to export one lakh rotis annually to Australia and the US. The initiative is set to boost the income of women producers significantly, as export sales are anticipated to fetch higher prices compared to the domestic market. The introduction of a new packaging unit, supported by HDFC Bank’s CSR initiative, is expected to further enhance the quality and export potential of Kalaburagi Rotti.
Officials have collaborated with Pune-based Ashtam Traders to facilitate exports to Australia, Canada, and the United States, with an agreement already in place. The initiative not only benefits over 1,000 women and 100 self-help groups but is also expected to increase their monthly earnings substantially. The upcoming inauguration of the packaging machinery facility at the District Agricultural Training Centre is poised to bolster export prospects and product quality.
