Rapper Kanye West is encountering difficulties as several of his European shows have been canceled. Following cancellations in the U.K., France, Switzerland, and Poland, concerns have arisen over West’s upcoming performance in Italy due to his anti-semitic comments. The scheduled headline show at the Hellwat Festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on July 18, is causing controversy.
The RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia, where the concert is set to take place, can accommodate up to 103,000 spectators, marking one of West’s largest arena appearances. Despite the current status of the Reggio Emilia concert, various groups including the city’s Jewish community, anti-fascist resistance organizations, trade unions, and politicians are demanding its cancellation. Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament and a prominent member of Italy’s Democratic Party, has called on the Italian government to act similarly to the U.K., France, and Poland.
While the city of Reggio Emilia holds a significant historical background for its role in the Italian resistance against the Nazis during World War II, the city’s mayor, Marco Massari, has taken a neutral position. Massari expressed his disapproval of Kanye West’s conduct and statements but clarified that any decision regarding West’s entry into Italy and his performance rests with the country’s Ministry of the Interior, which has not yet provided any comments.
Kanye West, known for controversial statements, has faced criticism for his social media posts and the sale of T-shirts featuring a swastika on his website.
