Strong criticism has been directed by the Karnataka BJP towards the Karnataka Police for their actions against Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members protesting at an event in support of Umar Khalid, who faces sedition charges. BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra accused the Karnataka government of permitting events that allegedly glorify individuals involved in national security-related cases, expressing concerns that such actions could foster “urban Naxal” activities in Bengaluru.
Vijayendra condemned the government for what he termed as “appeasement politics,” warning that such actions could transform Bengaluru into a center for “urban Naxal” activities. He criticized the government for allegedly disregarding public sentiment and the state’s security, highlighting the permission granted for a program supporting Umar Khalid, a figure linked to the Delhi riots conspiracy case.
The BJP leader raised questions about the implications of allowing events that could potentially disrupt peace and law enforcement in the state. He also denounced the arrest of BJP Yuva Morcha workers who protested against the event, emphasizing that organizing programs in support of individuals facing serious allegations was against the constitution and national interests.
Accusing the state government of stifling dissent by using police force against dissenters, Vijayendra vowed that his party would continue to oppose such groups and any backing they receive. The protest by BJYM members near the Bangalore International Centre against the book release event for Umar Khalid resulted in their detention and subsequent arrest by the police.
