Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to address various developmental issues concerning the state. During the meeting, Shivakumar presented a wooden carved statue of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna to the Prime Minister. Discussions primarily focused on key priorities such as infrastructure expansion, investments, urban mobility, irrigation projects, innovation, and welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of Karnataka’s residents.
The Chief Minister described the meeting as productive, emphasizing Karnataka’s dedication to contributing to India’s growth trajectory. He highlighted the state’s significant economic role and expressed the government’s eagerness to bolster its position through accelerated development and investment opportunities. Shivakumar also conveyed his readiness to collaborate closely with the Union government in the spirit of cooperative federalism to expedite development projects, attract investments, and fulfill the aspirations of Karnataka’s populace.
Shivakumar has been vocal about what he perceives as the Center’s neglect of Karnataka in financial allocations, citing issues such as unfair tax devolution, insufficient drought-relief funds, and low central contributions to infrastructure projects. He has actively advocated for the Union government to address these disparities, including expediting approvals for pending development proposals in Bengaluru.
