Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the state government remains dedicated to advancing the Mekedatu project, ensuring adherence to legal processes. Following a meeting with senior officials, Shivakumar addressed the media, highlighting the decisions made. In response to Tamil Nadu’s long-standing opposition to the project, Shivakumar emphasized that Karnataka has submitted a Detailed Project Report to the Central government for review.
The Chief Minister noted that the matter is currently under the Centre’s consideration, with Tamil Nadu pursuing legal avenues, including approaching the Supreme Court. Emphasizing respect for the Supreme Court’s stance, Shivakumar affirmed Karnataka’s commitment to proceeding responsibly while respecting neighboring states’ perspectives. The Mekedatu project, proposed for the Cauvery River in Karnataka, aims to address water needs in Bengaluru and surrounding areas.
Despite Tamil Nadu’s concerns over water sharing, Karnataka asserts the project’s necessity to meet Bengaluru’s increasing water requirements. The state has presented the Detailed Project Report to the Central Water Commission, awaiting approval. Shivakumar clarified that initiatives benefiting youth are not politically driven but aim to enhance young people’s quality of life and ensure security during inflation. As part of these efforts, the government plans to offer free bus passes to all students for improved educational access and mobility.
