Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the decision regarding the state Cabinet’s expansion lies with the Congress high command. He emphasized his role is to implement the list approved by the party leadership. Shivakumar assured representatives from North Karnataka that he would convey their request for senior MLC Salim Ahmed to be considered for a Cabinet berth.
Highlighting the Congress party’s commitment to inclusive governance, Shivakumar reiterated their dedication to uniting all castes and communities. He recalled his expectation of becoming Chief Minister upon Congress’s ascension to power in Karnataka but shared responsibilities with Siddaramaiah as decided by the party leadership. Shivakumar also mentioned his support for Salim Ahmed’s candidature despite initial opposition.
Shivakumar praised Salim Ahmed’s political journey, noting his past roles as Chief Whip and his current position in the government. He further discussed the party’s efforts in promoting minority leaders, citing examples of fielding candidates against influential opponents and providing opportunities to deserving individuals. The Chief Minister acknowledged the pressure from various communities seeking representation in the Cabinet.
Stressing the need for unity within the party, Shivakumar expressed openness to considering both experienced leaders and newcomers for ministerial positions. He highlighted ongoing discussions within the Congress leadership regarding Cabinet appointments, emphasizing the importance of leaders who garner public support. Shivakumar also addressed criticism over the withdrawal of cases related to the Hubballi riots, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining peace.
