Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar criticized the opposition for allegedly targeting the voting rights of marginalized groups through the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. He emphasized that his government aimed to raise awareness among citizens to protect their voting privileges. Despite reservations about the revision process, the state government is collaborating with the Election Commission to prevent any eligible voter from losing their right to vote.
Responding to complaints by Union Ministers H.D. Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi regarding irregularities in the revision exercise, Shivakumar stated that the government had challenged certain aspects in court and would continue seeking legal remedies against the scheduled timeline. While expressing discontent with the process, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding every citizen’s voting rights by cooperating with the Election Commission and promoting voter awareness.
Shivakumar highlighted that political parties, including Congress, BJP, and Janata Dal (Secular), had appointed Booth Level Agents as permitted by the Election Commission. He noted that election officials were strictly adhering to the Commission’s guidelines. The Chief Minister accused the opposition of lacking confidence in the Election Commission due to the government’s voter awareness initiatives, emphasizing that decisions regarding the revision process rested with the Commission.
Rejecting allegations concerning illegal Bangladeshi migrants, Shivakumar questioned the BJP’s failure to address this issue during its tenure. He emphasized the government’s extensive cooperation with the Election Commission during the revision exercise, claiming that Karnataka’s support exceeded that of other states. Shivakumar also mentioned the availability of online caste certificates for around 4.5 crore people in Karnataka and the government’s efforts to facilitate access to essential documents for voters.
Defending the government’s outreach initiatives, Shivakumar highlighted the establishment of help centers at polling booths to aid voters in the revision process. He reiterated the government’s focus on ensuring that all eligible voters can exercise their franchise without any hindrances.
