Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D. K. Shivakumar addressed the internal rift within the party by confirming that candidates for the upcoming by-election were chosen through consensus. The Bagalkote Assembly ticket was awarded to Umesh Meti, son of late H. Y. Meti, while the Davanagere South ticket went to Samarth Mallikarjuna, grandson of Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
Shivakumar mentioned that after discussions involving various party leaders, including the Chief Minister, a unanimous decision was reached to support the Shamanur family in the elections. He emphasized the unity within the party to contest and secure victories in both constituencies.
Regarding the minority community’s demands for tickets, Shivakumar acknowledged their requests, stating that it was reasonable for them to seek representation based on population. He highlighted the commitment of the selected candidates to follow the party’s decisions, even if asked to withdraw their nominations if necessary.
Responding to questions about the opposition’s candidates and the fielding of minority candidates by other parties, Shivakumar refrained from direct comments, emphasizing that each party had its own strategies and decisions. He praised the contributions of the late Shivashankarappa to Davanagere’s development, noting the family’s long-standing support for the Congress party.
Shivakumar addressed grievances regarding promises made to the Muslim community, pointing out past instances of alternative arrangements within the party. He highlighted the party’s efforts to accommodate various interests and maintain a cohesive approach in candidate selections.
