Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara stressed the importance of assessing the realization of equality within society and the legal system, despite the strong emphasis on equality in the Constitution’s Preamble. Speaking at a Law College graduation ceremony in Shettihalli, Tumakuru, he highlighted India’s progress in literacy, increasing from 12% at Independence to nearly 80% today. Parameshwara urged law graduates to see their profession as a responsibility to uphold the rule of law and ensure justice.
Highlighting the significance of the Constitution, Parameshwara credited Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for providing India with a robust constitutional framework that underpins the democratic system. He warned that weakening the Constitution would also weaken democracy, emphasizing every citizen’s duty to safeguard the values enshrined in it. Parameshwara pointed out the Fundamental Duties and Fundamental Rights outlined in the Constitution, stating that democracy functions effectively when citizens understand their rights and responsibilities.
Parameshwara stressed the necessity of a deep understanding of the law for effective advocacy and encouraged continuous learning among law graduates to excel in their profession. He motivated the graduating students to aim for excellence, noting that expertise and public confidence are key factors in being chosen for legal representation in higher courts. The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the backlog of cases in courts despite the large number of law graduates, calling for judicial reforms to expedite case resolutions.
