Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara has instructed officials to enhance coordination and take proactive steps to address a possible drought situation due to an expected Super El Nino weather event. At a disaster management review meeting, Parameshwara discussed measures taken by departments to tackle issues like rainfall deficiency, water scarcity, and fodder supply for livestock. He highlighted the importance of planning ahead to minimize the impact on residents and agriculture.
Parameshwara emphasized the necessity of developing district-specific plans for water supply, livestock fodder, farming practices, and water conservation. He also mandated that district officials receive guidelines to ensure readiness at the local level. Monitoring reservoir levels, groundwater status, and water usage patterns was stressed to enable timely interventions when necessary.
The Deputy Chief Minister urged swift action and close cooperation among departments to avert hardships for the public in the event of a natural disaster or drought. He also pushed for expedited approvals for borewell drilling to meet drinking water needs promptly. Parameshwara underscored the importance of efficient collaboration with the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Department to address community requirements effectively.
Officials updated Parameshwara on the current water situation in Karnataka, revealing that 122 taluks are experiencing water shortages. Tankers are supplying water to 139 villages, and 789 private borewells have been engaged to boost the water supply. Additionally, 669 villages are receiving drinking water from private borewells. Efforts are underway to ensure continuous water supply and alleviate the impact of potential worsening drought conditions in the upcoming months.
