Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, G. Parameshwara, cautioned that strict legal measures would be enforced if the recent violence during protests against the Bidadi Township Project was politically motivated or unlawful. He emphasized the right of citizens to express opinions peacefully but stated that violent actions, such as attacking officials, would not be tolerated. Responding to the FIRs filed against farmers for assaulting government personnel during a land survey for the project, Parameshwara assured that the government would act in compliance with the law.
The FIRs stemmed from a clash where farmers and women protesters targeted government officials conducting a Joint Measurement Survey (JMC) for land acquisition, resulting in a confrontation. Some farmers threw stones and chased the survey team, leading to the suspension of the exercise, while women reportedly struck officials’ vehicles with brooms. Parameshwara stressed that while peaceful protests are allowed, any unlawful or politically driven demonstrations would face appropriate legal consequences.
In efforts to clarify the necessity of the Bidadi Township Project and safeguard local interests, the Deputy Chief Minister mentioned plans to establish ‘Bharat Jodo Yuva Sanghas’ in Karnataka to foster leadership qualities and community engagement among youth. This initiative, inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s national unity campaign, will be implemented through various government departments, promoting sports, cultural activities, and national festival awareness among young members. Parameshwara affirmed the government’s readiness to allocate up to Rs 1,000 crore for youth empowerment if needed.
Regarding the delayed Cabinet expansion ahead of the upcoming Assembly session, Parameshwara assured that the government would function effectively with the existing ministers, dismissing concerns about the vacant positions. He also addressed allegations from the Opposition Leader in Council, refuting claims of ministerial appointments being influenced by “black money” payments. Parameshwara highlighted the government’s commitment to transparent processes and emphasized the distinction between political cultures.
