Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar, expressed concerns about the BJP’s future during a convention in Chikkaballapura. He likened the BJP’s situation to a bright lamp nearing its end, accusing them of aiming to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy. Shivakumar emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (MGNREGA) to protect rural employment opportunities.
The Deputy CM highlighted the role of panchayats in decision-making under MGNREGA, ensuring substantial work opportunities in various regions. He stressed the need to preserve MGNREGA, citing its significance in empowering farmers and laborers. Additionally, Shivakumar mentioned the government’s decision to name panchayat offices after Mahatma Gandhi to honor his legacy.
Shivakumar criticized the new scheme that requires states to bear 40% of the costs, predicting challenges for BJP-governed states in its implementation. He accused the BJP of adopting Congress’ guarantee schemes after initial criticism, asserting the Congress party’s commitment to upholding MGNREGA. The Deputy CM urged for support in defending MGNREGA against perceived threats to employment rights.
