The Karnataka government, led by the Congress, has announced its commitment to eradicating human rabies transmitted by dogs by 2030 and lowering deaths from venomous snakebites. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao unveiled two comprehensive state action plans – the State Action Plan for Rabies Elimination (SAPRE) and the State Action Plan for Snakebite Prevention and Control (SAPSE).

Aligned with the national goal of achieving “Zero Human Deaths due to Dog-Mediated Rabies by 2030,” the rabies elimination plan adopts a One Health approach involving various sectors. The state aims to reduce rabies deaths to zero by 2030 by providing free anti-rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin at healthcare facilities across Karnataka.

To ensure effective implementation, the government has established joint steering committees at the state and district levels. The initiative includes targeted interventions in 11 major cities under the Rabies-Free Cities Initiative, focusing on mass dog vaccination, pet registration, and strengthening anti-rabies clinics in medical colleges.

A separate action plan has been launched to address deaths caused by venomous snakebites, emphasizing prevention, timely treatment, and public awareness. Free treatment for snakebite victims will be provided, and private hospitals are urged to offer immediate care without upfront payment.

The government stresses interdepartmental coordination, improved treatment access, and public involvement in achieving the goal of eliminating rabies deaths and reducing snakebite fatalities in Karnataka by 2030.
