Amid concerns about the Congress government potentially discontinuing guarantee schemes, Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that the ongoing beneficiary review aims to prevent fund misuse and ensure benefits reach eligible recipients. Kharge emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating irregularities in scheme implementation.
He highlighted Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s directive to exclude ineligible individuals from receiving benefits. Kharge stressed the importance of removing undeserving beneficiaries while ensuring that eligible recipients continue to receive assistance. The government plans to establish a robust verification system to address issues like benefits claimed in the names of deceased persons.
Kharge mentioned that a high-level meeting is scheduled to discuss beneficiary verification under the guarantee schemes. The Karnataka government annually allocates over Rs 50,000 crore to five key schemes, including initiatives like free bus travel for women, foodgrain distribution to BPL families, and financial aid for unemployed graduates.
Commenting on the recent election results, Kharge attributed the Congress candidates’ success to a perceived leadership crisis within the BJP and JD(S). He noted that the outcome indicated a lack of confidence in the opposing parties’ leadership. Kharge dismissed claims of political inducement and emphasized that the Congress did not engage in influencing legislators from rival factions.
Addressing the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s opposition to the Mekedatu reservoir project, Kharge stated that each state acts in its own interest. He clarified that the project aims to store surplus water for Bengaluru’s drinking needs without causing harm to other states. Kharge criticized BJP MPs for their response to Karnataka-related issues, expressing disappointment in their approach.
Regarding a corruption case involving a police officer in Kalaburagi, Kharge assured that the matter would be handled seriously. He expressed confidence in the Congress party’s future electoral performance, anticipating success in upcoming local body elections and aspiring to regain power at the national level.
