Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara revealed a memorial outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to honor 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans who died in a stampede during IPL celebrations. The memorial, near the stadium, commemorates the victims of the incident that happened after RCB’s IPL win. Various dignitaries attended the unveiling, including MLA N.A. Harris and RCB CEO Rajesh Menon.

Parameshwara, speaking to the press, acknowledged the tragic stampede where 11 youths lost their lives during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations. Following the incident, the government and Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) faced criticism at national and international levels. He mentioned the steps taken by the government, including appointing the Justice Michael D’Cunha Commission to investigate the lapses.

The Commission provided short-term and long-term recommendations, with KSCA constructing a memorial in memory of the deceased fans. Parameshwara expressed gratitude for this gesture and highlighted the government’s efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future. He emphasized the importance of accountability and ensuring safety measures during cricket matches.

Parameshwara also mentioned granting permission for a cricket match at the venue on March 28, with reassurances of improved arrangements and police deployment. He stressed the need for responsible fan behavior during matches and urged against unsafe activities. The minister emphasized the city’s reputation in the cricketing community and the importance of maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all spectators.
