Karnataka Opposition Leader R. Ashoka criticized the Congress government, accusing it of financial mismanagement and a deteriorating fiscal situation in the state. He highlighted the leadership transition from Siddaramaiah to Chief Minister-designate D.K. Shivakumar, expressing concerns over mounting liabilities and pending payments. Ashoka alleged that the government’s focus on guarantee schemes had led to a reduction in infrastructure funds and a rise in debt servicing costs.
Ashoka pointed out that Karnataka’s total debt had surged to Rs 7.64 lakh crore, surpassing the budget size of Rs 4 lakh crore. He emphasized a deficit of Rs 94,428 crore this year, impacting development initiatives due to financial constraints. The Opposition Leader also criticized the delayed payments under various welfare schemes, citing outstanding dues of over Rs 75,000 crore to contractors, electricity suppliers, and transport staff.
Furthermore, Ashoka raised concerns about the impact of revenue policies on collections and compliance burdens. He questioned the effectiveness of the leadership change in improving governance, stating that the financial challenges remained unchanged. Ashoka predicted internal discord within the ruling party post-cabinet formation, indicating potential instability within the Congress ranks.
