Karnataka’s Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, criticized the state government for planning to build houses for land encroachers, which he believes could encourage illegal activities. He expressed worries that this move might lead to undesirable consequences, likening it to creating a problematic situation.
Ashoka highlighted that the proposed site for a waste management unit worth Rs 100 crore was originally rocky land that had been used as a stone quarry. He pointed out discrepancies regarding the claimed habitation by residents, citing Google Maps imagery showing the area as waterlogged and uninhabited.
Questioning the government’s motives, Ashoka raised concerns about the potential implications of providing housing to encroachers, emphasizing the need for thorough verification of the occupants’ identities. He also criticized the allocation of valuable land for this purpose, alleging irregularities and illegal activities.
Ashoka further pointed out the challenges faced by the state’s homeless population and criticized the speed at which housing schemes for outsiders were being approved. He called for a transparent process and a high-level investigation to ascertain the eligibility of the beneficiaries before proceeding with the housing allocation.
