In an effort to boost sandalwood cultivation, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) has initiated a program to combat sandalwood theft, as announced by Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil. The initiative invites farmers, scientists, and organizations with expertise in anti-theft technologies to collaborate with KSDL by sharing their knowledge and demonstrating solutions.
If the proposed technologies prove effective, KSDL will consider implementing them, with the organization covering the associated costs. Additionally, in a move to promote sandalwood cultivation, KSDL plans to honor top sandalwood suppliers on the birth anniversary of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, the former Maharaja of Mysuru.
Police officers, forest officials, and members of the public who contribute significantly to the apprehension of sandalwood thieves will also be acknowledged and rewarded. Minister Patil highlighted the increasing threat of theft faced by sandalwood farmers and emphasized the importance of supporting them legally and technically to expand sandalwood cultivation.
Over the past three years, KSDL has purchased 174.5 metric tonnes of sandalwood directly from farmers in Karnataka, transferring Rs 6.08 crore to their accounts.
