Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced plans to extend the Metro network in Bengaluru to alleviate traffic congestion. By December 2027, a total of 175 km of Metro routes will be operational in the city. Currently, 96 km of Metro routes are already in operation. The Yellow Line (R. V. Road and Bommasandra) was recently added, covering 24 km and reducing congestion by 30% along the corridor. Future plans include commissioning 41 km of Metro routes in 2026 and an additional 38 km, including the airport line, by December 2027. Extensions are also being planned towards Tavarekere on Magadi Road, Hoskote, Bidadi, and Nelamangala. Tenders for around 100 km of Metro works under Phase III, including elevated double-decker structures, will be floated next month. The Phase III project, costing Rs 25,311 crore, will be funded through a Rs 15,600 crore loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Separate tenders worth Rs 9,700 crore for the elevated corridor will also be issued in January. All Phase III routes will be constructed as elevated double-decker corridors to enhance commuting convenience and reduce traffic congestion.
