Addressing the media, Garg stressed the urgent need for a collective effort to combat this growing problem. He described drug addiction as a critical social concern in the region, noting a threefold increase over the past three and a half years, which he deemed alarming.
The Divisional Commissioner mentioned the government’s expanded anti-drug awareness campaign involving various stakeholders, including religious leaders. He highlighted the ongoing extensive awareness initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir, with personal oversight from the Chief Secretary. Garg also noted the training of counselors in health and educational institutions by IMHANS, aiming to establish a robust network for early intervention and prevention.
Efforts to engage all segments of society in the fight against drug addiction were underscored by Garg. He emphasized the involvement of religious leaders from Srinagar to raise awareness and support the community. The dissemination of helpline numbers by IMHANS to aid individuals seeking assistance was also mentioned, with a focus on providing continuous support to those in need.
In the realm of mental health services, Garg highlighted the evolution of the Government Psychiatric Diseases Hospital in Srinagar into the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) under the NHMP in 2009.
