A Delhi court has sentenced Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi to life imprisonment under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The sentence was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge, Chander Jit Singh after concluding arguments on the punishment’s quantum. Andrabi, the chief of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, was convicted on charges including waging war against the country and criminal conspiracy.
The court’s decision has drawn strong and divergent reactions from political leaders across party lines. BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur welcomed the verdict, alleging Andrabi’s deep involvement in activities like stone pelting and recruitment for militancy. He emphasized her role in instigating unrest and disrupting peace in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.
BJP National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh, supported the court’s decision, referring to it as a “clear and firm message of strict action against terrorism.” He emphasized that in ‘New India,’ there is no tolerance for anti-national elements and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
National Conference leader Sheikh Bashir highlighted the importance of respecting the verdict as it follows due judicial process. He mentioned that Andrabi has the legal right to challenge the ruling by approaching a higher court if she wishes to do so. Bashir emphasized the significance of following the law and respecting the court’s decision.
PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, took a different stance, focusing on humanitarian concerns. Despite acknowledging her ideological differences with Andrabi, Mufti stressed the need to consider the human aspect. She pointed out Andrabi’s years spent in prison and advocated for reconsidering her case, suggesting a fixed term instead of life imprisonment till natural life.
The case against Andrabi revolves around allegations of promoting separatist activities and mobilizing support for militancy. Agencies have accused her of playing a significant role in anti-national operations.
