Kerala’s Ancy Sojan, an Asian Games medalist, broke the women’s long jump record that stood for over two decades at the 65th National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. Sojan, aged 25, leaped to 6.88m, surpassing the previous record of 6.83m set by Anju Bobby George in 2004.
Sojan, aiming for a personal best, started strong with a jump of 6.73m and continued to improve. She dedicated her gold medal to her father, expressing joy at fulfilling his wish for a family member to hold a national record. Overcoming health challenges from last year, Sojan is thrilled to make a comeback before the upcoming Asian Games.
In another record-breaking feat, Maharashtra’s Sarvesh Anil Kushare set a new men’s high jump record at 2.31m, surpassing the previous record of 2.29m. Kushare attempted to raise the bar to 2.35m but fell short after a successful 2.31m jump.
