Kerala will witness a proud moment as Dr. Anil Menon, a NASA astronaut with roots in Ottapalam, Palakkad district, is set to launch to the International Space Station aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft. The launch is scheduled for 8.17 p.m. IST from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, kicking off an eight-month mission that will end in April next year.
Dr. Menon, hailing from Ottapalam and Ukraine, has excelled in various fields including as a physician, mechanical engineer, US Space Force flight surgeon, and pilot before joining NASA’s astronaut corps. His upcoming spaceflight is anticipated to contribute significantly to research on the medical challenges of long-duration human space travel, crucial for future missions beyond low Earth orbit.
Accompanied by Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, Dr. Menon will engage in a series of scientific experiments on the International Space Station. Ahead of liftoff, he expressed his readiness for the mission on Instagram, thanking NASA, his family, and friends for their unwavering support.
Dr. Menon’s journey to space from Palakkad adds to the district’s legacy of producing eminent personalities who have made a mark on India and the world. Palakkad has been home to influential figures in politics, culture, and public life, including M.G. Ramachandran, Shashi Tharoor, and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, among others.
Air Commodore Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, a flight instructor with the Indian Air Force and ‘Gaganyatri’ with ISRO, also originates from Palakkad. With Dr. Anil Menon venturing into space, Palakkad’s tradition of producing high achievers reaches a new milestone, this time in the realm beyond Earth.
