Kerala honored the late former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on his first death anniversary with memorial events organized by the CPI(M) across the state. Portraits of Achuthanandan were displayed in party offices and public areas, as party members paid tribute to his enduring political legacy.
The main event took place at Valiyachudukadu in Punnapra, Alappuzha, where Achuthanandan was laid to rest. CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan led the morning floral tributes at the newly constructed memorial, with a significant public meeting and rally scheduled for the evening, to be inaugurated by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan.
A half-bust of Achuthanandan was also unveiled at his ancestral home in Punnapra, symbolizing the lasting impact of his contributions to Kerala’s political landscape. Throughout his career, Achuthanandan transitioned from a senior Communist leader to a prominent mass campaigner, known for his anti-corruption efforts and advocacy on various social issues.
As Leader of the Opposition from 2001 to 2006, Achuthanandan emerged as a vocal critic of the government and gained widespread popularity. Despite internal party rivalries, he led the Left to victory in the 2006 Assembly election, becoming Chief Minister at the age of 82. His legacy as a political icon in Kerala endures, even after his passing in 2025.
