Kerala CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member John Brittas has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah concerning the reported intimidation of a young postgraduate student by the Delhi Police on June 5. The issue was initially raised by Brittas’ party colleague Brinda Karat, a former MP, in a complaint to the Delhi Police Commissioner regarding the treatment of Aahana Singh Kaith, daughter of Daleep Singh Kaith.
Aahana Singh was reportedly stopped by officers from the New Rajinder Nagar Police Station while she was at a gym in New Delhi on June 5. Subsequently, she was taken to another location where she faced inquiries about her political affiliations, social circle, and plans. The police allegedly questioned her about her potential involvement in a protest march organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on June 6, holding her under pressure during the interrogation.
In his letter, Brittas detailed that Aahana Singh was coerced to surrender her mobile phone to the police, and when she resisted, she was persistently pressured to disclose the contents of her phone and private communications. Despite denying any intention to participate in the protest, she was reportedly subjected to continuous monitoring, asked to share her live location, and restricted in her movements, causing significant distress and anxiety.
Brittas has urged the Home Minister to instruct the Delhi Police to carry out a prompt and unbiased investigation into the matter. He also called for an examination into whether similar actions were taken against others associated with the protest and emphasized the need for corrective measures if any violation of constitutional rights is confirmed.
