For the first time in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several of his cabinet colleagues are trailing in the election results. State Congress president Sunny Joseph noted this as a significant trend, indicating a potential power shift. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) faces a challenging day as the counting progresses.
As per the latest trends, 14 ministers, including CM Vijayan, are behind in their respective constituencies. In the 2021 elections, Vijayan secured victory in Dharmadam with a substantial margin of 50,000 votes. The United Democratic Front (UDF) led by the Congress is currently ahead in 93 seats, while the Left is leading in 42 and the BJP in five.
The Congress-led UDF is experiencing a strong surge, taking a clear lead in the initial rounds of EVM counting. This momentum suggests that their campaign focusing on anti-incumbency, price hikes, corruption allegations, and unemployment resonates with voters. On the other hand, the LDF, aiming for a historic third term, faces resistance in multiple constituencies.
The trailing ministers highlight the magnitude of the challenge, raising concerns about potential vote loss and the effectiveness of their development and welfare agenda. Despite earlier confidence expressed by party leaders like state secretary M.V. Govindan, emerging trends indicate a more competitive electoral landscape than expected. The UDF, on the contrary, shows optimism with early leads, hinting at a possible return to power.
While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party has limited seat leads, it aims to make incremental gains and enhance its vote share. The focus remains on whether the UDF can capitalize on its initial advantage to secure a decisive mandate and if Vijayan’s personal electoral battle can provide solace in a challenging scenario for the Left.
