The Kerala government has set up a three-member expert committee to evaluate and provide a report on the safe removal of soil accumulated at the Wayanad Kalladi Tunnel project construction site. This decision came after a high-level meeting attended by the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Public Works Minister due to concerns about the soil and debris buildup at the project location.
The expert committee includes Dr. Santhosh G. Thampi from NIT Calicut, Dr. Jude Emmanuel, an Environmental Scientist from DoECC serving as the Convenor, and a representative from NCESS. Their task is to assess the site conditions and recommend safe disposal or removal methods for the accumulated soil, which has drawn attention following a debris slip incident in the Kalladi area of Wayanad.
Chief Minister Satheesan previously mentioned that the stored excavated soil and debris near the construction site were linked to the debris slip incident, alleging that the contractor company neglected instructions to clear the material. Despite directives from the Wayanad District Collector and the District Disaster Management Authority, and instructions from the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, the contractor did not comply with the orders to clear the debris.
Expressing concerns about safety standards at National Highway construction projects in Kerala, especially with the approaching monsoon season, CM Satheesan highlighted the need for enhanced monitoring to prevent accidents during heavy rains. The government has been urged to address alleged safety norm violations at various National Highway construction sites by conducting inspections and identifying vulnerable areas.
The formation of the expert committee aims to ensure the safe and scientifically assessed removal of accumulated soil at the Kalladi Tunnel project site. This step is crucial for addressing construction safety issues, disaster preparedness, and ensuring a secure process for soil removal.
