Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar highlighted that India, as an inclusive republic, values all citizens equally, emphasizing its ability to embrace diversity while preserving its cultural essence. Speaking at the Republic Day parade in Thiruvananthapuram, Arlekar praised India’s 76-year commitment to democratic principles, earning global recognition as the “mother of democracy.”

The event witnessed a new clash between the Governor and the LDF government as Arlekar, while hoisting the national flag and inspecting the parade, chose not to follow the distributed speech, prepared in consultation with the state government, sparking political significance. This move adds to the ongoing dispute over the Governor’s alterations to the policy address delivered at the Assembly session, leading to a constitutional and political debate.

The disagreement escalated with the Governor seeking clarification, prompting Lok Bhavan to request the Assembly Speaker for the Chief Minister’s speech text and video footage. While the Republic Day ceremony proceeded smoothly, Arlekar’s decision not to read the prepared speech underscored the persistent tension between the state’s constitutional head and the elected government.

Highlighting Kerala’s achievements, Arlekar expressed pride in the state’s success in the Padma Awards this year. He commended recipients like former Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Justice K.T. Thomas, and P. Narayanan for their contributions, emphasizing Kerala’s national stature. The Governor also congratulated Padma Bhushan awardees Mammootty and Vellappally Natesan, recognizing their impact on Kerala’s cultural landscape.

Arlekar recalled the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram” and Kerala’s cultural legacy, citing contributions from figures like Adi Shankaracharya and Sree Narayana Guru. He stressed the importance of cooperative federalism for national progress, urging unity towards a “Developed India” by 2047 through shared vision and collective effort. The Governor highlighted Kerala’s advancements in education, healthcare, and social welfare, urging citizens to participate in National Voters’ Day for a stronger democratic ethos.

In district headquarters, state cabinet ministers led celebrations, with events held across Central and state government offices, clubs, and various locations in Kerala.
