Kerala Health Minister Veena George was injured during a clash with opposition student activists at Kannur railway station. The incident occurred as she was about to board the Vande Bharat Express after official engagements in Kannur.
Protesters from the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) gathered at the station to demonstrate against the Minister. Police intervened to clear a path for George, leading to a confrontation that resulted in her sustaining neck and hand injuries.
Despite initially planning to proceed with her journey, George had to cancel her trip due to discomfort from her injuries. She was subsequently taken to Kannur District Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Local leaders of the CPI-M visited the hospital following the incident, where doctors assessed the extent of George’s injuries. Meanwhile, authorities are expected to investigate the security breach that occurred during the clash at the railway station.
Speaker A. N. Shamseer criticized the incident, emphasizing that while protests are part of democracy, physically harming a minister is unacceptable. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the attack, describing it as a reflection of the Congress party’s negative political culture.
