He inaugurated the state-level World Environment Day celebrations at Kovalam beach, announcing a year-long campaign involving students, youth, and tourism clubs to raise awareness about climate change and protect Kerala’s delicate ecosystem.
Vishnunadh highlighted the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,’ underscoring the global challenge of environmental degradation and its impact on communities. He specifically mentioned the struggles faced by residents of Kuttanad and coastal regions due to climate change-induced crises like cyclones and rising sea levels.
The Tourism Department’s focus on responsible tourism aligns with the goal of sustainable tourism development in Kerala, recognizing the region’s ecological vulnerability. Vishnunadh drew inspiration from environmental activist Greta Thunberg, urging active participation from students and young individuals in conservation efforts. The year-long campaign will engage various organizations and tourism clubs to promote environmental awareness and responsible tourism practices.
Tourism Director M. Anjana emphasized the department’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable tourism growth in Kerala. The celebrations included a mock drill by tourism lifeguards, an Environment Day pledge led by the Minister, and a walkathon involving students and volunteers advocating for nature conservation.
