The first session of Kerala’s newly-elected Assembly concluded with an unexpected outcome. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan emerged as a strong political figure, surpassing the previously dominant Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Despite Vijayan’s decade-long unchallenged leadership, the tables turned during this session.
Vijayan, who had been a towering figure in the Assembly for years, faced challenges in his new role as the Opposition Leader. His interventions often fell short, inadvertently benefiting the government. In contrast, CM Satheesan, with no prior ministerial experience, demonstrated a deep understanding of legislative procedures and effective political strategies.
The internal disarray within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) further weakened the Opposition’s position. Infighting between the CPI(M) and the CPI hindered coordination, leaving the Opposition without a cohesive strategy. Several attempts to criticize the government backfired, including a failed display of muddy water as evidence against the police.
The session highlighted Satheesan’s ability to counter Opposition attacks and maintain a strong stance. His adept handling of challenges, coupled with the LDF’s internal struggles, shifted the political dynamics in Kerala. The once unassailable Vijayan now finds himself in an unfamiliar position, while Satheesan sets the tone for the new Assembly.
