Kerala witnessed a significant shift in power as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged victorious in the Assembly elections, overthrowing the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in several crucial districts. The UDF secured a clean sweep in districts like Malappuram, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Idukki, leaving the LDF without a single seat in these areas.
The electoral outcome highlighted a wave of anti-incumbency, with the UDF not only reclaiming lost constituencies from 2021 but also making substantial gains in traditional Left strongholds. Notably, Ernakulam witnessed a historic victory for the UDF by winning all 14 seats, while Malappuram saw all 16 seats going to the UDF, with significant margins by Indian Union Muslim League candidates.
The defeat was particularly severe for the LDF, with key Ministers and leaders like Veena George, V.N. Vasavan, and K.K. Shailaja facing losses. Even in regions like Kozhikode, considered a Left bastion, the UDF secured a majority of seats, signaling a significant political shift. The election marked a return to power for the UDF after a decade, while the LDF faced a substantial setback in terms of scale and loss of stronghold territories.
