The Khalistan movement, viewed as an ethno-religious state initiative, lacks substantial backing in Punjab, India, where Sikhs thrive within a democratic setup. However, overseas, some of its prominent supporters have ties to organized crime. Recent reports have unveiled that the Khalistan flag seen in Stockton, California, symbolizes criminal networks rather than liberation.
In a significant development, the FBI’s ‘Operation Hard Ball’ in California, particularly Stockton, targeted the Lawrence Bishnoi crime syndicate. The operation led to arrests related to drug trafficking, extortion, racketeering, and targeted killings. Notably, a Khalistan flag was found at one of the raided properties in Stockton, a city known for extremist Khalistani activities.
The report highlighted Stockton’s importance, citing its Sikh heritage and history of gang violence, extortion, and threats within the Punjabi community. Local Sikhs have expressed concerns about living under constant fear due to criminal networks exploiting diaspora ties for illegal activities. The recovery of a Khalistan flag during the operation underscores the intertwining of separatist ideology with criminal enterprises.
The investigation also revealed a connection to the 2023 assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia. US indictments have linked imprisoned gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his associate Goldy Brar to ordering the hit. This incident sheds light on a Khalistani-related gang conflict over drug routes, extortion, and influence in diaspora gurdwaras.
The report emphasized the negligence of Western governments towards Khalistani extremism, urging policymakers to address the convergence of extremism and organized crime. It warned that law enforcement actions alone may not suffice without tackling the underlying nexus, advocating for the safety of diaspora communities free from imported conflicts.
