The medals at the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg shone brightly, but athletes revealed that the real gold was in the challenging environment of the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS). Athletes from across India, representing various states, Union Territories, and institutions like the Indian Army, CRPF, and ITBP, acknowledged HAWS as instrumental in their achievements.
Established in 1948 by Brigadier General K S Thimayya, HAWS initially known as the 19th Infantry Division Ski School, evolved into a premier institution focusing on mountain mastery and winter warfare. Offering specialized courses in snowcraft and combat skills, HAWS has become a training ground not only for military personnel but also for competitive athletes.
Athletes like Kajal Kumari Rai and Bhavani T N shared their remarkable journeys of transformation through training at HAWS. Rai, a former skiing novice, became a champion after a 15-day skiing program at HAWS, while T N, a latecomer to snow sports, honed her skills at HAWS and the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering.
The success of athletes like Padma Namgail, Aman, and Manjeet in the men’s Nordic events underscores the significant role of HAWS in shaping winter sports champions. The rigorous training regimen at HAWS, supported by international expert trainers, has propelled athletes to international standards of excellence.
HAWS not only trains Army personnel but also hosts civilian trainees, fostering a culture of winter sports excellence. The world-class infrastructure, systematic training approach, and elite coaching at HAWS have not only benefitted the Army but also other forces like the CRPF, elevating their performance levels.
