North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently inspected a newly operational nuclear material production site, expressing determination to significantly enhance the nation’s nuclear capabilities. The visit, made alongside key party officials, was reported by state media without revealing specific details about the facility’s location. Seoul’s defense ministry identified the facility as an uranium enrichment site.
It is known that North Korea currently operates uranium enrichment facilities in Yongbyon, Kangson, and Kusong. The recent report has raised questions about the possible existence of a fourth undisclosed location. Kim highlighted that the country’s production capacity for weapons-grade nuclear material has more than doubled in the past five years, crediting the achievements to the country’s nuclear scientists.
Emphasizing the need to expand the nuclear deterrent in response to potential threats and crises, Kim stressed the urgency of enhancing both the quality and quantity of their nuclear arsenal. This reaffirms Pyongyang’s unwavering commitment to its nuclear ambitions. Additionally, an “important consultative meeting for bolstering up the nuclear forces” was held on the same day, during which Kim issued directives for accelerating the qualitative and quantitative development of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
