Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju questioned the Opposition’s move to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker during a recent debate. He specifically criticized Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for past actions like hugging the Prime Minister and winking at MPs inside the Parliament. Rijiju highlighted instances where Rahul Gandhi made statements asserting his right to speak without permission during the Budget Session.
Rijiju emphasized the importance of respecting the Speaker as the custodian of the House and criticized loose remarks made by the Leader of Opposition. He stressed that all members of the House should adhere to parliamentary rules and not consider themselves above the established protocol. Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s behavior, Rijiju pointed out the need to address individuals who disregard norms.
The Union Minister also mentioned an incident from 2018 where Rahul Gandhi winked inside the House, expressing his disapproval of such behavior. Rijiju’s mention of Priyanka Gandhi’s demeanor and dedication in the House sparked interest, with him suggesting she might be better suited for the Leader of Opposition role over Rahul. He praised Priyanka’s affability and ability to handle the position, drawing laughter from fellow members.
Rijiju defended the Speaker’s interventions as efforts to discipline unruly MPs, likening it to parental guidance. He criticized some MPs for defying the Chair and attempting to malign constitutional bodies through motions like the one against the Speaker.
