Kolkata saw extensive celebrations on the 12th International Day of Yoga 2026, featuring a major event at Red Road and a unique gathering on about 100 floating platforms along the Ganga near Millennium Park. This event became a highlight in West Bengal, attracting citizens, yoga enthusiasts, and political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Various yoga sessions were held across the city as part of the festivities, showcasing a collective effort to promote yoga as a daily wellness practice. West Bengal Minister Deepak Burman emphasized the significance of yoga as a part of India’s tradition and cultural heritage, essential for a healthier lifestyle.
Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon underlined the historical roots of yoga and its current revival, crediting Prime Minister Modi for reintroducing it. He highlighted the cultural importance of yoga in influencing the younger generation positively. BJP MP Khagen Murmu praised the event’s scale and the Prime Minister’s presence, expressing gratitude on behalf of the public.
Minister Dilip Ghosh marked the occasion as a significant milestone for West Bengal’s participation in global Yoga Day celebrations. He acknowledged the official organization of the event in the state for the first time, emphasizing the importance of the Prime Minister’s personal presence. BJP MLA Ritesh Tiwari described the Kolkata event as historic, noting the city’s transformation under new governance and the special presence of the Prime Minister.
Organizers highlighted the innovative floating yoga setup on the Ganga, symbolizing the blend of India’s cultural heritage with modern wellness initiatives. The event culminated in mass yoga demonstrations and coordinated activities at various venues across Kolkata.
