The Kolkata Police apprehended an individual in the Banshdroni area of Kolkata’s southern outskirts, seizing two improvised country-made semi-automatic firearms and four live cartridges from his possession. Identified as Satyabrata Basu Roy, a 28-year-old resident of Niranjan Pally, Kolkata, the arrest was made based on specific information. A case has been filed against Roy under the Arms Act, with ongoing investigations by the police.
In recent times, there has been a notable crackdown on illegal activities in West Bengal following the BJP’s governance. Kolkata Police have been actively targeting anti-social elements and have also taken action against Trinamool Congress leaders facing allegations of unlawful behavior. Notably, various Trinamool Congress councillors have been arrested on charges ranging from extortion to obstructing election campaigns.
One such instance involved the arrest of Shantanu Majumdar alias Mejo, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Baranagar Municipality, on extortion charges related to tenant disputes. Similarly, Bhishmadev Karmakar, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Berhampore, was arrested for allegedly disrupting Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury’s election campaign. Additionally, incidents like a Trinamool councillor assaulting a police officer and another councillor’s arrest under the Arms Act have raised concerns in the region.
