Kolkata Police have bolstered the city’s security measures in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections. The directive issued by Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand appointed Additional Commissioner of Police (I) Devendra Prakash Singh to oversee the election cell. This move aims to fortify law and order in the city before the elections.
To support Devendra Prakash Singh, a team has been assembled by Lalbazar as per the notification. Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner (IV) Santosh Pandey, Joint Commissioner of Police (Organisation) Ajay Prasad, and Deputy Commissioner (Cyber) Abhishek Modi are part of this team. Additionally, Kolkata Police Second Battalion Deputy Commissioner Anirban Sarkar and Intelligence Department Special Branch Deputy Commissioner Vidit Raj Bhundesh are included in the team.
The team’s role is crucial in enhancing the city’s security system as the elections approach. The initiative focuses on increasing surveillance on illegal activities, especially cyber monitoring and intelligence operations. Various branches of Kolkata Police have already started implementing activities following the directive issued.
Following the issuance of the poll notification, significant changes have occurred in the state police’s administrative and top positions. Supratim Sarkar was replaced as Commissioner of Kolkata Police by Ajay Kumar Nand. Furthermore, 13 Superintendents of Police (SPs) were transferred across districts, and the Election Commission transferred five Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) from different zones earlier in the day.
West Bengal’s Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in two phases next month on April 23 and April 29, with the results set to be announced on May 4.
