Kolkata Police have lodged a complaint against the Mamata Banerjee-led faction in Trinamool Congress for alleged “contempt of court” during the Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21 at Cathedral Road in Central Kolkata. The complaint, filed at Hastings Police Station, accuses the faction of breaching the Calcutta High Court’s order to conduct the rally in one lane while keeping the other lane open for traffic.
An insider from the city police revealed that the High Court had imposed conditions for the rally, limiting participants to 2,500 and mandating the use of only one lane on Cathedral Road. However, due to the rally exceeding the permitted number of attendees, both lanes had to be closed, disrupting traffic flow.
The complaint stated that despite the court’s directive, supporters gathered on both sides of the road, leading to traffic obstruction and necessitating police intervention to maintain order. Consequently, a case has been filed against the rally’s conveners and organizers for contempt of court at the Hastings Police Station.
Another complaint has been filed regarding alleged vandalism at the rally stage on the night of July 20, where a group of individuals on motorcycles created a disturbance and damaged property before fleeing the scene, leaving behind two motorcycles that were recovered by the police. Efforts are underway to identify the culprits involved in the incident.
