The Kolkata Police swiftly replaced Officer-in-Charge Chameli Mukherjee at the Kalighat Police Station within a day of her appointment. This marks the fourth change in leadership at the station in just over a month. Notably, Kalighat Police Station covers the area where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resides in south Kolkata.
Balai Bagh has now been appointed as the new OC of the Kalighat Police Station, taking over from Chameli Mukherjee. Bagh, who previously served as the Additional OC of Polerhat Police Station in the Bhangar division, now heads the Kalighat police station in the Kolkata South division. The decision to appoint Bagh was made by Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand.
Following the recent West Bengal Assembly polls, the Election Commission has implemented several changes within the Kolkata and state police departments. The rotation of OCs at Kalighat began on March 29 with Utpal Ghosh from the Kolkata Police’s Intelligence Department assuming the role. However, Ghosh was removed by the Election Commission within a month of his appointment.
Gautam Das succeeded Ghosh as the OC of Kalighat on April 25 but was suspended by the Kolkata Police after a controversial social media post, leading to his removal on Saturday. Chameli Mukherjee, who was initially appointed to replace Das, had her appointment revoked within 24 hours. Subsequently, Balai Bagh was brought in from Polerhat Police Station to take charge at Kalighat.
The West Bengal Assembly elections were conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29 across 294 constituencies. The results are awaited and will be revealed after the vote counting on May 4.
