Kolkata Police, known for its tarnished image during the previous regime, is now undergoing reforms under the new BJP-led government in West Bengal. The force aims to reclaim its reputation as the “Scotland Yard of the East.” Reforms include reintroducing a uniform code to prevent misuse of plain-dress cops for political purposes.
The new government has reopened the R.G. Kar files and suspended three IPS officers linked to the city police, including the former police commissioner. Kolkata Police faced criticism for intelligence failures and sending plain-dress cops to intimidate critics. Efforts are underway to enhance physical fitness among officers and increase police personnel by 20,000 in the coming months.
To modernize the force, the Kolkata Police have implemented strict disciplinary guidelines and barred personnel from official duties in plain dress, except for specific specialized departments. The government has reinstated sidelined senior IPS officers to investigate institutional corruption and crimes against women during the previous regime. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of physical fitness and announced the dismantling of the West Bengal Police Welfare Board.
CM Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the need to transform the police force and increase its efficiency. The government’s focus is on enhancing the professionalism and image of the Kolkata Police. The reforms aim to rebuild public trust in the police and ensure a more accountable and effective law enforcement system.
