The Kolkata Dock System (KDS) at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata set a new record by handling 3,186 TEUs in a single day on July 6. This milestone coincided with the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the port’s namesake, surpassing the previous record of 3,081 TEUs set on June 12, 2026.
SMP Kolkata reported an 8.40% year-on-year growth in total container volume for the first quarter of April to June 2026 compared to the same period last fiscal year. JSW Infrastructure, managing Berths 7 and 8 of KDS, began operations with the first vessel, marking a significant step in enhancing cargo handling efficiency and customer service through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project.
Furthermore, JSW Infrastructure secured the concession for the upcoming Outer Berth Project, a first in the history of SMP Kolkata. This project, combined with the modernization of existing berths, is expected to boost the port’s capacity and strengthen its position as the primary riverine gateway in Eastern India.
SMP Kolkata also reopened the Thermal Coal Handling Berth-3 at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), kickstarting coal mobilization from Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) to southern thermal power utilities. Equipped with advanced facilities, Berth-3 offers competitive tariffs for thermal coal handling on the eastern coast, providing a cost-effective logistics solution for power producers.
Rathendra Raman, chairman of SMP Kolkata, emphasized the port’s commitment to operational excellence, infrastructure enhancement, and customer-focused services. With ongoing modernization efforts and improved cargo handling systems, SMP Kolkata aims to achieve even higher standards in the future.
