Kolkata experienced its chilliest day of the season on Christmas as the temperature dipped below 14 degrees Celsius. The city woke up to a minimum temperature of 13.7 degrees Celsius, with areas like Maidan and Alipore covered in morning fog. Despite the cold, residents donned sweaters and jackets to visit various attractions like the Alipore Zoological Garden, Eco Park, and Victoria Memorial.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore predicted a further 2 to 3-degree drop in minimum temperatures over the next couple of days. This trend is expected to allow people in the state to enjoy the winter weather during the holiday season. The Met Office had earlier forecasted a decrease in temperatures across West Bengal starting from Christmas, accompanied by stronger northerly winds.

On Thursday morning, Kolkata’s minimum temperature was recorded at 13.7 degrees Celsius, slightly below the normal range. The weather office also mentioned a potential 2 to 3-degree temperature decline in South Bengal over the next three days. The prevailing dry weather in the state will be accompanied by morning fog in various districts.

A yellow alert for dense fog has been issued for Purulia, West Burdwan, and Birbhum districts, with visibility expected to decrease significantly. Additionally, light to moderate fog is anticipated in Kolkata and other South Bengal districts, along with north Bengal. Meanwhile, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur districts have been warned of dense fog conditions.

In terms of temperature, Birbhum district’s Sriniketan recorded the lowest at 8.5 degrees Celsius in South Bengal on Christmas Day. Other areas like Suri, Barrackpore, Burdwan, Bankura, Asansol, Diamond Harbour, Midnapore, and Berhampore also experienced varying degrees of cold. In north Bengal, Darjeeling reported the lowest temperature at 4.5 degrees Celsius, with Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Kalimpong following suit.
