Students’ organization Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) criticized the alleged discrimination faced by Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) students at Shyam Lal College. The organization demanded a public apology from the college principal and action against the college authorities. KYS Delhi State Committee member Bhim Kumar highlighted that SOL students were being charged for storing their bags and mobile phones at the examination center.
According to Bhim Kumar, students arriving for exams at Shyam Lal College were surprised to see a banner outside mentioning charges for bag and mobile phone storage. The college was charging Rs 10 each for these services, and students were also informed that the college would not be responsible for any lost items. Bhim Kumar emphasized that examination centers are supposed to provide storage facilities for students’ belongings, a service that was allegedly denied to SOL students.
He further alleged that this incident was part of a pattern of discrimination against marginalized students. Bhim Kumar claimed that SOL students had faced similar mistreatment in the past, citing examples like making students write exams in tents during winter and being excluded from university programs. The organization called for a formal apology from the college principal and urged Delhi University to prevent such incidents in the future.
