Bengaluru, Aug 11 (IANS) Two construction workers were killed and three others injured after a portion of earth caved in at the Kanteerava Studio underpass construction site in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning.

The turnkey project is being executed by PJB Engineers Pvt. Ltd., the contractor appointed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

The deceased workers have been identified as Sonaram from Odisha and Parimal Baashak from West Bengal. The injured workers are Sadanand from Jharkhand, Imrias from Chhattisgarh and Sunil Kalkor from Jharkhand.

Following the incident, the BDA Chairman ordered an independent inquiry to ascertain the cause of the accident. The inquiry committee will comprise a retired judge and a retired chief engineer and has been directed to submit its report within 45 days.

According to the BDA, the portion of earth caved in while construction work was underway, affecting five workers at the site.

The authority said efforts were underway to send the mortal remains of the deceased workers to their respective native places in coordination with the Labour Department and the concerned district administrations.

The injured workers are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The BDA said it would ensure they receive the best possible medical treatment and would bear their medical expenses. Necessary assistance will also be extended to the injured workers and their families.

As part of the relief measures, the BDA announced compensation of Rs 8 lakh each to the families of the two workers who died in the accident.

The BDA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased workers and said necessary measures were being taken in the aftermath of the accident.

The Kanteerava Studio underpass is being executed as a turnkey project, under which the contractor is responsible for the complete execution of the project, including design, construction and commissioning, before handing over the completed facility to the client.
