After over three months, the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has ended the social boycott on all Kuki-Zo MLAs who participated in forming the Manipur government. The boycott was imposed on these legislators following the government’s establishment under Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. Initially, three out of the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs were part of the government formation process.
The KZC, the apex body of the Kuki-Zo tribal community, announced the withdrawal of the social boycott in a statement issued on Wednesday. The boycott, declared on February 5, 2026, has been lifted considering the current situation and the need for unity among the community. The KZC emphasized the importance of working together and revoked the boycott through a meeting resolution.
Nemcha Kipgen, an MLA from Kangpokpi Assembly constituency, who was among the Kuki-Zo legislators involved in the government formation, had taken oath as Deputy Chief Minister virtually from Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi. She is the only woman minister in the current Council of Ministers led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
The KZC had criticized the Kuki-Zo MLAs for joining what they termed a “Meitei-dominated government,” accusing them of disregarding the political stance and sentiments of the Kuki-Zo people. The Council of Ministers under Khemchand Singh is anticipated to expand soon, with seven ministerial positions still vacant.
